If you have not seen our Read For Life trailer up close, picture this: a bright, friendly mobile library, its shelves packed with brand-new books, parked right outside the Smiley Elementary lunchroom on a sunny Redlands morning. Add a few dozen wide-eyed kids, a couple of Rotarians with coffee in hand, and teachers ready to help, and you have the recipe for one of our favorite mornings of the year.
We spent the morning reading aloud in small groups, talking with students about their favorite stories, and — the best part — letting every child pick a book to take home and keep. Thank you to the Smiley Elementary staff and to every member who came out to volunteer. This is literacy in action, and it is what we mean when we talk about "people of action."
